SUSPECT SHOT, KILLED IN STANDOFF IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY

A CLEARFIELD MAN IS DEAD TODAY FOLLOWING AN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING IN CLEARFIELD BOROUGH.  STATE POLICE TELL US THE INCIDENT STARTED WEDNESDAY EVENING AROUND 6 WHEN POLICE STOPPED 48-YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER KANOUFF ON A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP.  DURING THAT STOP, POLICE FOUND OUT HIS VEHICLE DIDN’T HAVE A VALID REGISTRATION PLATE AND ALSO THAT KANOUFF HAD AN OUTSTANDING PAROLE WARRANT FOR HIS ARREST.  AS POLICE ATTEMPTED TO TAKE HIM INTO CUSTODY, KANOUFF FOUGHT WITH POLICE AND ESCAPED, FLEEING TO HIS APARTMENT WHERE HE BARRICADED HIMSELF, REFUSING TO FOLLOW POLICE COMMANDS.  POLICE FINALLY DEPLOYED CHEMICAL AGENTS IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS THURSDAY, FORCING KANOUFF TO EXIT THE BUILDING WHERE HE CONTINUED THE REFUSAL TO FOLLOW COMMANDS AND POINTED A GUN AT OFFICERS THAT WERE ON SCENE.  AT AROUND 2:50AM, POLICE SHOT KANOUFF, WHO WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE.  THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT IS ONGOING.
